Blog shelf life

January 19, 2013

I remember reading some where that the life of the average ‘good’ blog, not insinuating that this blog is good is around 2 years. After this time, the creator usually has better things to do with their Saturday nights, such as:

1. Go to a bar and rage with their fans, amassed from the 2 years of hilarious writing.

2. Simply stop being and able to think up new ideas, including being able to think.

3. Found better things to do with their life, aside from trolling David Koch read:’cock’ on twitter for his idiotic comments around women breast feeding in public.

4. Switch over to being a hip new cool Dad blog because you have had children, and thought it would make you popular around preschool pick up time, with the non existent other nerd dads. (Even though I love askyourdadblog.com I still don’t believe it actually exists, ans is the product of another university dorm room born blog.

5. Turf their back lawn.

6. They start a professional career in extreme pogo-sticking (see video below). Not sure if its crazy or amazing BTW.

I really don’t want to see Pandainabattlesuit die. Sure my life is pretty busy with Mrs Panda and I now having three little ones under five, and being a manager in a large health related building probably doesn’t help. Nor does living in a city where it takes 39mins to drive 2.3kms to get home to your house. Surely I could write from my iPhone.

Why don’t I do that anymore?

I made a new year’s resolution not to make blogging my new years resolution. If anyone found out that was my new year’s resolution, I would be ridiculed for an extremely long time. Jogging every day seems like a much easier alternative, and it is more acceptable to not adhere to it.

I will promise though how ever in frequently, and when people do return my request for pocket interviews very amateurish ones at that I will post those too.

Or pogo videos, you decide.

Corporate Identity: cuff links, the window to the soul.

September 12, 2012

I am going to share a secret. I’m a geek. Nerd. Trekky. I love Doctor Who. Think there is still only 3 episodes of starwars starting at ‘A New Hope’ and know what the acronym TARDIS stands for.
I also work in a very corporate slash executive office environment. Everyone is very serious. There is a healthy dose of narcissism everyday and enough email traffic to overwhelm the most hard core origin of Internet meme ‘forwarders’.
This means I am stuck in a uniform of sorts. The corporate overly presented style suit, shirt, tie, belt. Well based on this I needed to buy some shirts which lead me to accidentally buy French cuffed shirts. And for those not in the know these type of shirts don’t have buttons to fasten the cuffs together which meant I needed cufflinks.
Little did I know the plethora of cufflinks mostly boring, but the geek in me with the help of Etsy and ebay I found some truly geeky cufflinks. Due to the said ‘uniform’ and like silicone valley’s penchant for expressing them selves through rainbow and crazy socks. Yes that is a thing. I realized I could give a small window to my geek soul through my cufflinks. Conservative but effective. So I thought my fellow geeks who may also be searching for a way to break the monotony of corporate life by having a small price of your soul attached to you french cuff.
I have started a small yet addictive collection.
Warning: proper geek images ahead.
Here are some photos of the small collection I have amassed over the past month.

20120912-224559.jpg honestly if you don’t like Lego. You have no heart

20120912-224626.jpg and resident evil. It is a little bit of irony to wear these umbrella corporation cufflinks when you work for a large soulless company. Not saying I do but it’s a nice silent joke.

20120912-224839.jpg and the empire or rebel alliance? you choose.

20120912-225006.jpg These ‘Steam punk’ ones are probably the coolest I have purchased so far. From the Ukraine they are meant to give the impression that they are mechanical cufflinks. From a historical future. They are made from tiny watch movements and very nerdy.

20120912-225337.jpg who doesn’t love Green Lantern?

20120912-225547.jpg if only you could get little Soundwave Cufflinks.

20120912-225648.jpg These Pi ones from Etsy were too cute to pass up.

20120912-225758.jpg These are meant to be a little bit ‘Steam punk’ too but I can’t really see
It. Didn’t stop the purchase for need quirk factor however.

20120912-225926.jpg and these are the most amazing ones. TARDIS cufflinks. I know right. Mind blown. The only thing you could build on with these as part of your corporate identity is a long wrap around multi colored scarf and a small crinkled bag of jelly babies. And perhaps you could refer to a colleague as ‘K9′.

I guess proof reading this post. I have figured out corporate life steals some of your identity. You have to go a little crazy to inject it back in manually. Through these little windows to your geek soul.

Curiouser and curiouser

December 22, 2011

Some ideas are pretty fresh. Hand made things are pretty much always fresh unless your Nan is making you the same scarf this Christmas that she has done for the past 15 years.

That is not so fresh.

But putting a handmade spin on tech and design has always had me interested.

Check out this project from Lauren Manning & Camile Wei-Hsin Lin

Over at
The Curiosity Project

The have made these terribly nice to look at hand made QR code posters.

I love when some one comes up with an idea that is not only visually pleasing but has the angle of art and design mixed with tech.

I think that this is why I like Apple products.

These are three posters I stole* from their website. (*by stole I mean borrow forever)

The Curiosity Project has many awesome links and articles updated daily and is truly excellent reading. It gives many daily inspirations,  some of which I will do up coming posts about.

I will also follow up shortly with a high speed chase, to get some words and thoughts from one of our favorite artists Nanami Cowdroy.

Bit of a segway but hey. It’s the day before holidays and our work network is down, oh and it is still raining in December in Australia. Can’t wait for the meteorologist visionaries to start with their prophecy about how a cow from Whittenoon is causing Saturn to line up with a dog from Glen Rowin causing unprecedented cold waves throughout NSW only.

AKA Grenomj [that part of your brain]

November 15, 2011

I am waiting for some poorly thought out interview questions, to try and even scratch the surface of how this 22 year old from South Korea, has what seems like the most expert grasp on not only the whole visual spectrum of colour as we know it, but also command over every single polygon you could have ever Dreamed.

Minjae Lee aka Grenomj is blowing up all over the internet. Once again thanks to the internet starting with me looking at second hand coffee machines, then leading me then to look at time-lapse videos of the earth which some how led me to stumble across Minjae. There was probably some funny dog clip or 30-45 seconds of nyan cat and dinosaur comics.

Nightmares aren’t in black and white, and dreams aren’t always in colour but when they collide I would hope they looked like this.

(self portrait II)

These works, I am not by any means an art critic just seep, seep in through your eyes, through your optic disc, change into chemicals at some stage and proceed to the part of your brain that you never alledgedly use according to those fact or fiction science shows.

and lets take it back. This guy is 22. yepper.

I know some 22 year olds….wait I don’t know any year olds any more strike that from the record That would not have the same command over their toileting habits as Minjae have over colour, shape and form.  What can I say I am absolutely mesmerised by his art.

(dace)

I am very anxiously awaiting for him to answer some questions from an email interview I sent and I am sure he is busy and they are mundane questions so no offence will be taken but hopefully it will shed some light on the humility but also the pride and state of emotion that these photo-esque portraits convey.

Every body on the interwebs should be blowing this guy and artists like him up.

(blushing flower)

(Gaze II)

I just don’t/didn’t think this could come out of pencils and paper, and as much as I love computers I really don’t think they could 100% reproduce explosions of coloured emotion and timestamped attitude that Minjae Lee captures and shares.

A bit of a wank-on I know….but tell me these pictures his management company forwarded to me aren’t fucking rad.

Thanks to Roth-Mgmt.com for correspondence, I hope to update this post with a Minjae interview soon, or never. I am sure he is proper busy in his mind that leads to these sorts of works.

Speaker by [Apple*] well sort of

October 28, 2011

Purchased this the other day as I sat in my office my iPhone playing music on loud speaker as the owner of any smart phone would know, just doesn’t cut it.

So I decided to start browsing eBay for some sort of cost effective, well designed, micro speaker or dock.

This one jumped out of the page at me. I can’t give specific URL to find the product as it probably breaches a whole bunch of Apple copyrights, but if you are desperate and cannot find it let me know and I will give you the store details.

The packaging was right up there with Apple packaging in terms of good looks and cool science lab design. Very akin to the box I purchased my 6th gen Nano in.

and the back gave great tips to remember to back up data to your local or home computer lulz.

The product consisted of the actual tiny little speaker module, and the dual function speaker cable and usb charger cable.

The speaker has a small round black on off button on the bottom and the mini USB connector hole that serves as a connection point for the dual function cord supplied with the speaker

There isn’t a need for the unit to be plugged into power, as it is driven by a lithium ion battery, and the little apple glows white when the speaker is switched on.

and to plug your phone or whatever in? well a 3.5mm jack. Not digital signal I know but come on it is for an office not for a THX home cinema.

and with an iPod Nano 6th Gen in the form of a lunatik watch, doesn’t it make the most adorable little office stereo?

let me know if you want eBay store details!!

So much crap to buy, so little time

October 26, 2011

need a new welcome mat?, nerd?

or maybe you need a new flash drive

or maybe you need someone to talk to in your office?

or perhaps you are having an 8bit day?

I know, I know, it is all at thinkgeek.com but when was the last time you had a browse?

Just put a garden up there.

Nice conversion. Thinking of doing one of the same in the back yard above the clothesline. Who’s in?

This is truly a beautiful idea. Maybe they should consider it for the narrow waste of metal that has bloomed from the sydney monorailfail. Perhaps we could plant petunias all the way along it or some herb planters, and grow some basil. I really thin it would be a little too narrow to pass off as a jogging track.  - But I thought of the jogging track idea first if Clover is asking.

Blue Lounge iPhone. [received and loved]

October 5, 2011

Well, with super quick UPS shipping from Blue Lounge I have already received some of my goodies from them .

As you would expect they are just awesome. All are complete life hacks and the price was quite competitive.  Here are some pictures of the MiniDock in action

beautiful packaging.

\

looks good, but unfortunately two iPhones cannot be plugged in side by side in the conventional Australian power point.  It also sits a little further out from the wall due to the alternative Australian Power supply.

but it still beats the crap out of hanging it on the bench via the messy cable.

I also purchased the Milo iPhone holder so I could integrate it into my work space. it is very handy especially for making video calls, and using the iPhone as a flip clock. It is a stylish addition to my work place.

This is just for cool value, it does get your iPhone off the desk and scratch free. All of these were pretty ok cost wise. Shipping was a bit steep but considering the price you pay the delivery was super fast, like super fast.

All of the products were made in the highest of quality and do not have any flaws. The product description was  spot on, and I am extremely satisfied, now just to get my Bluelounge.com iPad2 kicks.

I would definitely look for future products from blue lounge

Desk Mascots [sanity helpers]

September 26, 2011

Ever talk to yourself at your desk?

Yeah me neither I talk to these little guys. When Travelling to Japan, one thing I cannot help but do is pick up some miniature anime figurines. They are just so cute.

Who else has some mascots on their desk? email your desktop mascots to me and I will post them! at Panda@Pandainabattlesuit These are some of mine.

Maybe some are a little inappropriate for work, but in saying that some of the people at my work wear things that are more inappropriate for work.

What are your stress coping helpers for work? Maybe your desk mascot is a bottle of blue label johnny walker, or perhaps a bottle of over strong cough syrup.

Hey I am easily pleased, and most of the time get better answers from these than sending an email.

I may start collecting more, but it is a fine line between having a few cool mascots and having a OCD collector of ecchi, at your work desk no less.

If only I had a job with DannyChoo.com  then it would be totally acceptable.  If only he would accept non Japanese speaking/writing people on the same salary I am currently getting, I think Weezer wrote a song about that occuring “Only in in Dreams” – …..great album
